My Neighbor Totoro – Synopsis

My Neighbor Totoro is the story of two little sisters Satsuki and Mei, who, in post-war Japan in the 1950’s, move with their father, Tatsuo Kusakabe, into the countryside to be near their mother Yasuko, who is ill in a hospital. So, the younger children are particularly eager to settle into their new home, which is quite old, has a lot of greenery around it and appears to be quite rich in flora and fauna. The girls are delighted to be in a new environment and each day brings new adventures to the girls.

While adjusting to the new circumstances, the girls also find out that there are some weird, magical beings living in the woods nearby. Most important of these is Totoros, a huge playful and friendly bear like spirit who is also a protector of the forest and becomes an immediate pal of the sisters. Along with the Totoro, who also depicts small soot spirits (called susuwatari) and a magical Catbus, introduce wonder and magic to the girls, a world that is close, but not in the same realm as the everyday life.

The storyline of the film is uncomplicated and revolves around the Kusakabe family where they lead an ordinary life. The elder sister Satsuki plays a more responsible role as the younger Mei is still running around the house as a toddler and her father is at work whilst their mother stays in the hospital. The film features the relationship between the two sisters as one of its core subjects and depicts the ups and downs of being a sister. Of the two, Mei is the younger one, more adventurous and is more eager to meet Totoro who she meets when she is out in the woods all by herself. She discovers the large cat in a camphor tree, who is sound asleep, and quickly becomes quite attached to him.

As the plot develops, so does the bond between the girls and Totoro, who assists them in panicking moments: Otto calls the Catbus. One notable scene from the whole film is when Satsuki and Mei are at a bus stop and it happened to be raining. They were waiting for their father. Totoro comes out of the shadows to see what is happening. He covers Satsuki with a leaf to protect her from the rain, while Satsuki was actually waiting for her father. When a strange cat-shaped bus appears, it takes Totoro with him and the girls are amazed at what happened.

With the mother’s absence still being unbearable for the family, the fantasy begins turning drama. One of the nurses conveys to the girls that their mother’s health condition may have deteriorated, which makes Mei in distress take drastic steps to run away from home so that she can meet her mother. This brings about a desperate and worried search from Satsuki, who later on also approaches Totoro looking for me. Turned to a cat with a huge belly and broad eyes, it seems as though the girls are adults in the Chinese word. Satsuki assists trolls in looking for Mei. In the end, both siblings are able to embrace, amongst other things, during the hospital visit when they need to see their mum.
